Places to Sell Online

General Merchandise

Sites that allow artists to upload images for sell an various items.  Usually the artists get commission whenever an item is sold.  The site takes care of production, shipping and payment.

Merchandise sold varies depending on site as do the type of files that can be submitted.  Check the tag cloud for tips on these sites.  ("Red Bubble Tips" for example.)

Red Bubble
Currently offers apparel, prints, cards, calendars, mug, throw pillows and duvet covers, stickers, phone cases and tote bags.  Accepts jpg and png files.  A single image can often be used for multiple items.  Offers a widget to display works available on other sites.  (Click on your account icon in to right, then "Account Details.  Then choose "Promote".)
Example of how it looks (1 row, 2 columns):

Oddly, when you click on an image it goes directly to the image on a phone case instead of the default setting chosen with the image is uploaded. It's not the best option, but it does allow you to promote your Redubble portfolio on your own web site or blog.

 Fine Art America/Pixels
Basically the same site with different fronts.  You use the same account to access both sites.  (You only need to set up an account at one of them.  The other can be accessed with the same screen name and password.)

Pixels.com is newer and was designed to allow the company to offer items beyond prints.  Right now additional items are limited to phone cases.

Two additional differences: Fine Art America allows artists to offer the original copy of their artwork for sale while Pixels offers licensing of images uploaded to their site.  The first is good for those artists other than photographers and the second is good for photographers and graphic artists.  (You get access to both just be creating an account with either site.)

Offers free and premium accounts.  Free accounts have limits on the number of images that can be offered for sale at any time.  Premium accounts can offer unlimited images and get access to additional features.  (Shopping widgets and an online store.)  The $30/year cost is fairly reasonable given the added features, but it is an additional expense compared to some other sites.

Fine Art America/Pixels offers excellent social media integration for promoting images.  Premium members also get access to shopping widgets that can be integrated into their web site and/or Facebook.  (Hover mouse over name at top right of screen and select "Behind the Scenes".)

You can see an example for the shopping cart widget at the bottom of this blog.  The "My Fine Art America Store" links to the online store offered as part of the premium package.  There is also a slideshow option.
